Physicians

All physicians who practice medicine in Prince Edward Island must be registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island prior to beginning practice. The College is responsible for ensuring that only qualified, competent, and ethical physicians are permitted to practice medicine within the province.

Registration requirements may vary depending on the physician’s background and intended scope of practice. Physicians are encouraged to review the current opportunities through the Government of Prince Edward Island website for up to date job postings.

In some cases, physicians holding a Full General licence in another Atlantic province may be eligible for streamlined mobility options, such as the Atlantic Registry, which can facilitate practice across Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador. See Atlantic Registry page for more information.

In some cases, physicians holding a Full General licence in Canada, may be eligible for the streamlined Extra-Provincial Route to registration. This process of registration for those who qualify would waive some of the registration requirements needed.

All physicians who wish to practise medicine in PEI, are required to apply for registration, through PhysiciansApply.

Once registered, physicians are expected to uphold the professional, ethical, and clinical standards required for safe practice in Prince Edward Island. This includes obtaining valid patient consent, maintaining appropriate standards of care in both in-person and virtual settings, meeting prescribing and documentation requirements, ensuring proper management of medical records, and fulfilling professional obligations related to patient safety, continuity of care, and mandatory reporting.

Following registration, physicians are required to maintain ongoing professional development through participation in approved continuing professional development (CPD) programs and must renew their registration annually to remain in good standing.
