Certificate of Professional Conduct

A Certificate of Professional Conduct (CPC) is an official document issued by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island that verifies a Registrant’s registration history and standing with the College.

Certificates of Professional Conduct are commonly required when applying for licensure in another jurisdiction, seeking hospital privileges, pursuing employment opportunities, participating in educational placements, or satisfying credentialing requirements established by regulatory authorities, health care organizations, or educational institutions.

Who Can Request a Certificate

A Certificate of Professional Conduct may be requested by a Registrant who currently holds, or has previously held, registration or licensure with CPSPEI.

The certificate confirms the Registrant’s registration status and may include information relevant to the Registrant’s professional standing with the College, in accordance with applicable legislation, policies, and regulatory requirements.

Information Included In a Certificate

A Certificate of Professional Conduct generally confirms:

  • Registration and licensure history with CPSPEI;
  • Current registration status and standing;
  • Any restrictions, conditions, limitations, or undertakings affecting registration, where applicable; and
  • Other information that the Registrar is authorized or required to disclose to the requesting organization.
  • Information relating to disciplinary findings, professional conduct matters, regulatory proceedings, or other matters affecting a physician’s standing with the College.

How To Request a Certificate

The Registrant requesting a Certificate of Professional Conduct must submit the required application or authorization form, provide the details of the regulatory authority, health care institution, employer, or organization that will receive the certificate and pay the required fee. This can all be done through the Registrant’s member portal.

To protect the integrity of the credentialing process, Certificates of Professional Conduct are generally sent directly to the receiving organization and are not released to the physician for onward distribution.

Registrants should ensure that all required information and authorizations are included with their request to avoid processing delays.

Processing Times

Processing times may vary depending on application volumes, verification requirements, and the complexity of the request. Registrants are encouraged to submit requests well in advance of licensing, credentialing, employment, or application deadlines.

Because receiving organizations may establish their own validity periods for Certificates of Professional Conduct, registrants should confirm the receiving organization’s contact information and confirm if the Certificate should be requested within a specified timeframe, before submitting a request.

Practising in Other Jurisdictions

Registrants who have practiced in jurisdictions outside Prince Edward Island may be required to provide Certificates of Professional Conduct from those jurisdictions when applying for registration, licence renewal, hospital privileges, or other professional appointments.

Similarly, physicians seeking registration or employment outside Prince Edward Island may be asked to obtain a Certificate of Professional Conduct from CPSPEI as part of the receiving organization’s assessment process.
